Teen from Germantown High Fatally Shot in Jackson; Family Calls for Justice

Saleh Ghasan Humaid, a 17-year-old student at Germantown High School in Gluckstadt, was killed in a shooting late Friday evening in North Jackson, as Capitol Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The fatal shooting occurred around 9:25 p.m. on September 19, near the intersection of Sunnyvale Drive and Sandalwood Place — a neighborhood that includes an elementary school, an indoor basketball center, and a soccer complex. Authorities say Humaid sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

On Saturday, Hinds County Interim Coroner Jeramiah Howard officially identified the victim as Saleh Ghasan Humaid. His family confirmed he was a student at Germantown High School, which serves Gluckstadt — a suburban community outside of Jackson.

As of now, no suspects have been named and there have been no arrests. The investigation remains active, and Capitol Police are appealing to the public for help. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Capitol Police at (601) 359-3125.

Family members have expressed deep sorrow and frustration. They’re urging the authorities to move swiftly and bring those responsible to justice. The loss has reverberated through the community, particularly among students and faculty at Germantown High who knew Humaid.

Neighbors have described the area where the shooting happened as usually quiet despite being close to several community hubs for kids — the school, playgrounds, sports facilities. That such a tragedy could occur there has shaken many in the neighborhood.

Authorities say forensic and witness investigations are ongoing, and they hope that anyone who saw or heard anything unusual that night will come forward. Humaid’s death is the latest in a troubling pattern of violence affecting young people in the region.
