In a devastating turn of events, a promising young high school baseball star, Connor McCaffety, and his parents, Clint and Meghan McCaffety, tragically lost their lives in a multi-vehicle collision in Milam County, Texas. The fatal crash occurred on Monday evening as the family was en route to Connor’s baseball game at Rogers High School.
According to reports from the Milam County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around 4:40 p.m. in the 6000 block of Texas 36, just south of Milano. The McCaffety family was traveling westbound on Highway 36, returning from a high school golf tournament in Brenham, when they encountered a construction zone and their Ford sedan came to a stop.
Tragically, a 26-year-old man from Bellmead, driving an 18-wheeler, failed to control his speed and collided with the rear of the McCaffety’s vehicle. The impact of the collision forced the Ford sedan into a Kia SUV that had stopped behind them, driven by a 45-year-old woman from Fort Bend, Texas.
The Kia was subsequently pushed off the roadway and overturned, resulting in injuries to the driver, who was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple for treatment.
The consequences for the McCaffety family were devastating. Clint McCaffety, 43, his wife Meghan, 39, and their 16-year-old son Connor were all pronounced dead at the scene. Connor was a junior at Rogers ISD and a well-regarded member of the high school baseball team.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is currently investigating the crash to determine the precise sequence of events and factors that contributed to this tragic loss. Initial reports suggest that the driver of the 18-wheeler may have been at fault for failing to control his speed in the construction zone.
The Rogers Independent School District released a statement expressing their profound sadness over the loss of Connor and his parents. The district noted Connor’s significant contributions to the school community, both academically and athletically, and offered their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the McCaffetys.
In the wake of this tragedy, the extended family of the McCaffetys has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to support the family through Kelsey McCaffety at Buckholts State Bank in Rogers. Kelsey is Connor McCaffety’s sister.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution, especially in construction zones where traffic patterns can change abruptly. The loss of Connor, Clint, and Meghan McCaffety is a profound blow to their community, and their memory will undoubtedly be cherished by all who knew them.
